Kite charts

Kite chart

GraPL automates the production of kite charts. You simply set up the chart, and use the data sheets to log the raw data as it is collected. Simply add new data, and refresh the chart. You can even save a chart as a template for future experiments or coursework.

The above chart of vegetation cover shows real data collected on a field study by geographers from Bootham School in June 2000. It is available in the kite.gpl sample GraPL file.

Population pyramid

Population pyramid for Ruratania

Although population pyramids are one of the most common graphs geographers require, it is hard to get them to look good with most charting software. GraPL however makes them a breeze. We even provide the above chart as a sample in the barchart.gpl samples file, so that you can get started right away.

Distribution charts

Distribution of Field Pansy in Ryedale.

GraPL does not stop with simple bar charts and line plots. Thanks to its ability to produce composite plots you can even draw maps!

The above plot uses a series of line plots to draw the rivers, and a scatter plot showing which tetrads of the North York Moors contain Field Pansies.

Although not shown in this example, GraPL can vary the marker size in relation to the number of occurences at a given point, which is ideal for charting epidemics.

If you would like to plot data over a real map, you can load and accurately position any bitmap (or metafile) as a background image for your charts.

Rainfall

Rainfall at Gilling in 1999

GraPL is the perfect tool for recording data from your weather station. The data sheets can be used to record the readings, the inbuilt calculation tools can be used to summarise the data and the advanced plotting engine can then chart the data in an easily readable form.

This chart accurately shows rainfall, daily and cumulative, for Gilling in North Yorkshire for 1999. It is included in the rainfall.gpl sample GraPL project.
